- Cockroaches scavenge for food, but can survive long periods of starvation. Cockroaches mostly consume decaying organic matter, but will eat almost anything. They prefer sweets, but are known to eat paper, boots, hair, bread, fruit, book bindings, fish, peanuts, cloth and dead insects.
- Adult cockroaches live for between 4 and 21 months. Their eggs hatch in 6-8 weeks. The adult American cockroach is reddish brown in appearance with a pale-brown or yellow band.
- American cockroaches were introduced into the U.S. from Africa as early as 1625 and spread throughout the world on trading ships.
